Windows XP stores two sets of configuration options

Windows XP has a nifty feature for NIC configuration called an alternate configuration. It’s only available if your main configuration is for obtaining an IP address automatically (a Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) server exists on the network) and the alternate configuration (the other network) doesn’t have a DHCP server.

The alternate configuration can be set up for either an Automatic Private IP Address (APIPA) or fixed IP addresses. Click the Alternate tab to enter the information for the alternate IP information, and Windows XP switches to it if it can’t find a DHCP server when you boot into the other network.
