Windows XP SP3 installation Tips ID: 327101 By Puniksem Qassia If you have Windows XP home with SP2 installed, and found that SP3 fails repeatedly to install, I found one resolution after a long search through the Microsoft error database. Article ID : 327101 This error is caused by third party software that modifies the startup 'boot screen' However the article recommends you completely uninstall the software that affects the installation, I did find however that reverting the boot screen back to windows default without removing the software worked just as well. This was a frustrating and time consuming problem for me where windows updates would not function resulting in SP3 not installing successfully, the reason/s for the failure were far from clear. As a footnote, now I've successfully installed SP3 I would highly recommend the new 'cached desktop search' feature for users with extensive file collections. Contributor's Note I hope this information helps resolve a very annoying update conflict with SP3 users.
