Windows XP Internet Connection Sharing

If your Windows XP computer has the modem, then this computer is the host. You have to configure the computer for hosting, and you also have to create the software disk you’ll use to configure the client computers.

I go over the Windows XP Home Networking Wizard, which is a total solution for setting up a network and sharing your Internet connection.

If you only used the wizard to set up your network, you can rerun it to set up Internet Connection Sharing and to create a floppy disk for the client computers.

Use the following steps to accomplish this:

Configuring Computers for Networking

1. Choose Start All - Programs - Accessories - Communications - Network Setup Wizard.

The Network Setup Wizard opens. The first window is an introduction to the wizard, so click Next. The next window is a reminder of things to do first (you’ve already done them), so click Next again.

2. Select the connection method for a host computer, and then click Next.

The wizard offers several choices, but because you’re setting up the host computer for Internet Connection Sharing, you must choose the option that indicates that this computer connects directly to the Internet.

3. Select the DUN connection you created, and then click Next.

4. Name the computer, and then click Next. If you already ran the wizard to create your network, the name is already there, as is any optional description you
entered.

5. Name the workgroup, and then click Next. If you already ran the wizard to create your network, the workgroup name is already entered.

6. Approve the configuration settings. If something seems wrong, click Back to correct the error. Otherwise, click Next and wait for the wizard to apply the configuration settings to your system.

7. Select the option to create a setup disk, and then click Next. Follow the wizard’s prompt to create the disk.
If any client computers are also running Windows XP, you don’t need to use the floppy disk you made. Just run the Home Networking Wizard on each of those computers and answer the wizard’s questions appropriately.

This means instead of saying “Yes, the modem is here,” you say, “Use the network to connect me to the modem.”
For computers running versions of Windows earlier than Windows XP, insert the disk in the floppy drive and follow the instructions the wizard provides to run the software.

You cannot use the floppy disk on a computer running Windows 2000; you must set up that computer manually.
The TCP/IP configuration must be set to obtain an IP address automatically.
