Windows Virtual Environment (Honeypot PC)
By Puniksem Qassia of CTEK-Solutions.co.uk
HOW TO: Make a computer 'sticky' A few months ago I decided to obtain a small computer setup as a 'Honey pot' desktop computer. Running the XP based Windows OS wasn't enough, I built a customized dedicated stand alone environment specifically designed to attract the worst of what the internet has to offer, Virus, Trojans, Worms, Malware, Spyware, Browser hijackers and more... The object of the challenge was to create a computerised magnet for malicious threats born from internet attacks. For this I chose the Shuttle (barebones) See image #1 below I created a secondary operating system running inside an encapsulated virtual environment. One way in, and no way out. Logistical and fuzzy analysis of the core systems were performed in real-time from outside the protected environment from within the primary host operating system. The main success of this setup was the advantage of being able to quickly create secure remote environments to test and analyse data generated by malicious activity from within each environment. Massive amounts of data were generated from setting out traps, ‘bait’ software to pro-actively entrap any malicious threats at were encountered. This is an ongoing investigation to determine the level of malicious activity on the internet, which will take several weeks to analyse the data. Watch this space...
