Why ambition is so important

By Anthony Ashard

From the time we learn to walk and talk, we dream of what we might become. We give it all we've got to achieve our dreams & goals but destiny can play a cruel hand against our best efforts to realise those childhood dreams.

Do we accept what life and fate has dealt us or do we continue to pursue our ambitions with a passion that one day might bring them to a reality for our efforts?

Setting ourself goals will inevitably lead to many a failure, but without those failures we lose the urge to set goals for ourselves. It's the driving force of our ambitions that lets us set out to achieve our ambitions, fulfilling our childhood dreams.

Having set your goals means you take risk of encountering failure and heartache for not reaching them, but that doesn't mean you stop having goals and objectives.

Just because you fear crashing your car, that doesn't mean you will keep it in the garage, that's not what the passion of driving is all about.

What did you want to be before you grew up?

Contributor's Note

What is Ambition?

Ambition is a driving force. Ambition is your mental capacity to utilize your knowledge, environment, relationships, and personality to achieve happiness. What is happiness? Well that can only be determined by the individual and there are a wide ranging scenarios and ideals that define happiness. We as humans desire happiness. Ambition is that desire that pushes us to function at maximum level in the face of obstacles or challenges.

Learning to walk must have been an ambition, we achieved that so why not other dreams.

If we let go of our dreams, we die inside. Never let go.

Dreams and passions are what makes it worthwhile to get up in the morning.

Without a dream or ambition we wake each morning wondering why we bothered.

I wanted to be just what I have become. My childhood was not the easiest place to be, so I wanted to have autonomy and a chance to learn new things, particularly a better way of life. Of course, that is a never-ending process, but now at least there are no impediments.

My dream is to never grow up and so far I have been fairly successful at it.
