What if technology fails (part 2)

A while ago I wrote about the potential affects of what an 'Electro-magnetic' bomb could have on our daily lives and how we could inadvertently be driven back into the stone age if we were to be attacked on a grand scale by such devices. It's fast becoming a reality that such non-lethal devices are more favoured to weapons of mass destruction, however even though there wouldn't be any human casualties as a direct result of an 'Electro-magnetic' device, there would be many consequences as a result of deploying such a mechanism in densely populated areas. For example we rely heavily and some even totally depend upon technology and machinery to perform many of our daily tasks, with computers and computerised equipment all around us, but imagine if you will what it would be like to be suddenly and without ANY warning lose all that technology and hardware in an instant. How would you cope? Nothing around you works any more, no television or radio, no computers or internet, all mobile communications would be down too, no G.P.S satellites, NO cars and most modern transport rendered unusable. Could we cope? or would we quickly revert back to savages, hell bent on our own 'every man for himself' survival. The devastation that would follow from using E.M.P devices, if deployed in major capitals of the world is truly unthinkable. The realism of this type of devastation is not as far fetched or fictionally based as one might think, but a very real possibility even now this technology is under military development, and has been for a number of decades. For many years the US military have been creating E.M.P devices and perfecting ways to deploy them with maximum effectiveness. The majority of E.M.P usage would be by military services constructing and using devices that are aimed at highly defined targets, perhaps to knock out enemy communications, disrupt machinery and technology, however in the wrong hands E.M.P technology could be used for far more sinister, devastating & widespread attacks. While these 'eBombs' can cause localised and widespread damage to electronic equipment, they do not explode in the conventional sense, this gives rise to a type of terrorist that can use a practically undetectable portable means of attack. I know I could handle it for a little while. Chop wood, carry water and all that... but there are things upon which I am fully dependent. I don't live on a farm or grow my own vegetables and while I used to be a good shot, my eyes are not what they used to be and I'm not sure I could hunt with success. And what about health care??? Money in the bank? Forget nuclear bombs, this EMP stuff is downright SCARY. I love my gadgets, but I think missing them would take a back seat to worrying about living. I hope we never have to experience such a thing. Maybe I need to start stocking up. [only partly joking]
Hey Hey. When electrons flow in a medium an electro magnetic field is set up around the medium. If the medium is wound into a coil then the electromagnetic field can be used as in relay switching. But electricity flows in the nerve system. Why then should one of these EMP devices be considered safe around humans?
I have heard (from somewhere...) that protection against an EMP attack is relatively simple. Relative to what I don't know. Karla is right. It is downright scary. One can only hope that our government and military, and infrastructure leaders have thought of it and made the appropriate precautions. Or else...

You can pretty much say that only armed forces technology and communications are adequately protected against most Small scale E.M.P attacks, however there is little anyone can really do to prevent non-commercial and consumer electronics from such a high intensity E.M.P attacks. it would be both impossible and impractical to shield all of our daily used electronics from a threat that is as yet unknown in potential destruction.
It would be a very rude shock at first. I know I would be wanting to look up on the internet how to all sorts of things and formulas for this and that, but we would cope. Eventually everything would be built up again, I think, because human beings are amazing. We strive to be better, and are chagrined at our failings, but each one of us is still a miracle and sometimes we perform even better when there is a great challenge to be met.
