Western digital External hard drives

Recently Western Digital introduced the
My Book World 1TB Network Hard Drive.
Product Code: 306727

I have a few points I wish to raise here and will start by saying that I believe the advertising for these drives are at best misleading.

I was interested in buying the drive because the advertising online at PC world site stated:

Quote: "Centralised storage for your home network. Add this network hard drive to your wired or wireless network for a surprisingly simple and secure way to access your data anywhere, anytime. At home, in the office, and anywhere in the world - even when your local computer is turned off"

Unfortunately what they fail to inform potential customers is that there is a monthly/annual subsciption fee just to use the remote access feature.

Nowhere in the advertising, packaging, or at point of the sale in-store are customers made aware that they will have to pay up to $79.00 a year!.

Click here to see the full product description at PC world website.

I also bought a Tomtom recently that had the same hidden extra's, for example: having to pay for voices, safety camera updates, map updates, traffic updates, truely the list of 'additional' services goes on and on.

It seems to be a growing trend not just to sell us technology but to find ever increasingly cunning ways to get more and more money from cunsumers after initial product sales.

Today's retail industry seems hell bent on selling us products that have hidden costs and forced sales of 'additional' services we are not warned of until long after purchase.

Contributor's Note

Would you have bought it if you knew you had to keep paying after you spent a fortune on the product to start with?

I agree with you totally.

The same applies to the backup software that they provide, I believe with the Essential Office version of the drive. The basic version is horrible - and that is being polite! The cost to buy the professional version is ridiculous.

I do however like the WD external drives, and the 2 that I have (both 500gb) have proved to be reliable - so far...

CONTRIBUTOR'S REPLY

It would be nice of stores like PC World to inform potential customers that products can incur additional after sales costs, few stores do, or even bother to identify those products. Damned retailers just seem to care about selling you extended warranties rather than informing the customer of product issues. I'd trust them more if they could be more honest.
