To quit or not to quit, that's the question
By Anthony Ashard
It's hard to imagine that once I was not a smoker, however after some thirty plus years, I've finally knocked smoking completely, not so much a case of will-power winning over the evil weed, but more the determination to prove to my wife and myself that I could quit, like she did, her motivation to quit came from the untimely demise of her father, and yes it was cancer that eventually got the better of him. It seems all the more unfair because of his efforts to quit smoking cigarettes some eight years prior to being diagnosed with lung cancer. As any smoker will tell you, It's all too easy to say to yourself, I could really do with a cigarette right now, but it's only the determined quitter that actually does nothing about the urge to go buy some cigarettes. All too often saying to yourself 'I'll have just the one' just to ease my nerves, but we all know it doesn't work that way, does it? plus they only come in 10's and 20's. One leads to another then another, and before you know it, it's back to 20 'ones' a day! HOOKED AGAIN! Even after weeks, months, and for some years after, still get the urge to light one up, and it's only will-power that prevents them sparking one up. How do you convince yourself that smoking just that one will not hurt, because it does, and you know it! It's never too late to quit smoking, researchers say even for lung cancer patients, kicking the habit can extend life. Yes I know, by then you might think to yourself, it's a bit too late to give up then, but is it? Believe it or not, one of the major reasons I chose to give up smoking is the fact that as a smoker I can still smell smoke on others, and it's truly repulsive, I feel sick just of the smell of a smoker standing close to me, say in a queue, or passing by in a shop. Now I've quit, the smell is even more repulsive, yet in a strange almost uncontrollable way, a smell that can bring about a long lost urge to light just one up. Recently the UK and European government decided to print shock tactic images of cancer victims and sufferers in an attempt to persuade smokers to give up. The strong visuals which include the corpse of a lung cancer victim, rotting teeth and a tumour growing from a victim's neck did little to persuade me personally, it seems that knowing what smoking does didn't really make all that much difference. At the end of the day, it's your will-power and determination that will win over the evil smoke, not the advertising campaigns or extremely taxed packets or patches. What's in a cigarette besides tobacco? Here's a short-list of the 599 Additives allowed by the US government in cigarettes. * Acetanisole * Acetic Acid * Acetoin * Acetophenone * 6-Acetoxydihydrotheaspirane * 2-Acetyl-3- Ethylpyrazine * 2-Acetyl-5-Methylfuran * Acetylpyrazine * 2-Acetylpyridine * 3-Acetylpyridine * 2-Acetylthiazole * Aconitic Acid * dl-Alanine * Alfalfa Extract * Allspice Extract,Oleoresin, and Oil * Allyl Hexanoate * Allyl Ionone * Almond Bitter Oil * Ambergris Tincture * Ammonia * Ammonium Bicarbonate * Ammonium Hydroxide * Ammonium Phosphate Dibasic * Ammonium Sulfide * Amyl Alcohol * Amyl Butyrate * Amyl Formate * Amyl Octanoate * alpha-Amylcinnamaldehyde * Amyris Oil Full list of chemicals allowed by the US government: Here Have you quit smoking? How long were you a smoker? Have you had any relapses? What finally made you quit?

Great intel, Anthony. QUIT sounds great, best of luck to them. Thank you for sharing thie detailed information. Best wishes. Thanks also for the Greeting. Frederick
Anthony, great Intel. Well done on stopping smoking. As you rightly point at the end of the day it`s your willpower that makes you quit. I`ve never smoked but I appreciate that it must be hard for those who do. I`ve always disliked smokers lighting up in a restaurant when others are eating. Now I see that in Spain they are toughening the laws on smoking in public places - about time! http://expatsinspain.co.uk/page29.htm#56584

I agree, smoke smells repulsive whether one is a smoker or not. It's unpleasant to kiss a girl who's just had a fag. But having grown up in an era when everyone smoked, the stale smell of tobacco in an office does trigger a sensation that is vaguely pleasant.

CONTRIBUTOR'S REPLY
Yes Nick, it's quite crazy how something so disgusting can also be so appealing!
Well done for giving up smoking
