Thin-Film Speakers - Exciting New Technology
By Anthony Ashard
Ever since the creation of the humble loudspeaker, little has changed in the overall design. Housed in a metal frame, a large magnet surrounds a coil of wire on a cylinder of card attached to a cardboard sounding cone. Although the shape and materials that have been used have been refined over the decades, little else in the way of innovation has hit the speaker market until recently. With the ever increasing demand for larger flatter High Definition televisions means the space available inside for quality internal speakers fails resulting in a lower quality sound. Older televisions had plenty of room inside and this resulted in big high quality loudspeakers, sadly in fact, the sound from TV sets’ with internal speakers has arguably gotten worse. Today’s flat-screen LCD & Plasma televisions have far less space inside resulting in less room for the air displacement required to produce deep resonating sound waves, therefore resulting in the inevitable purchase of addition high performance speakers perhaps setting one back another £300-£500. Emo Labs, a Waltham, Massachusetts, have now created a flat completely transparent “speaker” that can go in front of a flat screen display, thus turning the entire surface of the screen into one enormous bass filled high fidelity speaker. Companies including Warwick Audio and NXT Technologies, two British companies, and a Korean television manufacturer, Plasma & Ion Beam Corp, have similar plans to produce flat screen integrated speakers. People are spending hundreds of pounds on large flat screen TVs expecting fantastic video and audio, but when they get their new TV's home becoming quickly disappointed, realising their old cathode television had a far superior sound quality. The biggest flaw is with the thinner display cases where there is not enough room to create the displacement of air required to produce bass notes resulting in a tinny unimpressive sound. Not only TV screens, but imagine wall mounted pictures concealing a high definition high power speakers, or speakers built into windows! The mind boggles!

Thank you for sharing these technology improvements, Anthony. Emo labs isn't far from my home. We never know what's going on in our back yards. Keep up the good work. Best wishes. Frederick
Wow, BOLF a new range of spy microphones now. Hidden in plain sight. Reg
Kewl, no more tinny speakers.
That's great. Everything else is shrinking so I guess speakers should too. Sound is almost as important as the picture.
If we keep doing more and more with less and less pretty soon we will be able to do everything with nothing.
