Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) Explained

By Anthony Ashard

Here's a few facts about Secured Socket Layer technology.

SSL prevents anyone from meddling with information passed to and from a website servers.

SSL encryption is used by secure websites in order to prevent others from reading your personal data.

SSL assures you that you are connected to the right site by employing a digital certificate of authentication. It pays to check the certificate prior to entering private data.

Typical uses of SS Layers are for denying unauthorised access from a client attempting to connect to a secure server.

When using a website to make financial transactions, i.e. eBay, PayPal and/or similar banking sites, SSL is a critical layer of protection against 'phishing' techniques used by hackers and 'key-logging' software that may be lurking undetected on your computer.

If you suspect that your computer may be compromised, you should stop using your computer for financial and secure data transactions until you have scanned your computer for malicious threats.

Contributor's Note

Never use a website for financial data transactions until you are sure you have checked the authenticity of the site's certificate.

CONTRIBUTOR'S REPLY

I'm honoured James, that I've been able to both educate and inform at least one person, it makes this all worth while.

Thanks for a good clear explanation. These acronyms leave me boggled so many times.
