Recover your lost/stolen iPod (update 01)

By Puniksem Qassia of www.puniksem.com

Just to keep followers of this project up to date:

I have updated the software installer, and will soon be setting up mirror hosting on a few select popular sites,
Mention no names, Downloads.com (sorry did I say that out loud) My Bad!

One possible issue suggested by Mark (a friend) asked if the embedded email server relies on the firewall permission to allow internet access so the automated email response can be sent.

To answer this, the automated software uses the standard Microsoft mail server, as a result the server is recognised and considered safe by most firewall products, and will either generate an automatic firewall rule, or already be allowed port permissions.

How it works:

The package consists of two elements, text files with preset responses and a simple email server. The software is run by means of a simple batch file, so in effect every time the iPod is connected to a computer and internet it send an pre-defined email response, in that response the header details of the attached computer, it's possible IP, location and email account details from where it was last connected.

In the next product update I will include an automatic owner excluder, so when the iPod is connected to the rightful owners computer, it knows to disable an automated response every time it's connected.

This software is not a 100% failsafe, but does add an additional layer of recovery protection.

Contributor's Note

Nothing is installed on your ipod directly, however you are given step by step instructions for installation of the file-sets manually. Eventually I may introduce a fully automated installer, but at the moment I feel manual installation is the best method. To use this utility 'Disk mode' on your iPod must be enabled.
