Problems with Nokia's N97 (flagship) phone
By Anthony Ashard
If you're thinking of buying a new mobile phone, and have been looking at the new Nokia N97, I urge you to think again and think hard before deciding on what you will spend you hard earned money on. I recently paid allot of money for Nokia's new 'Flagship' model the much acclaimed N97, and within a few days started to understand that I had in fact bought a very nice looking paper weight! Battery - Standard battery, Li-Ion 1500 mAh Camera - 5 megapixel camera (2584x1938 pixels) Features: GPRS - Wi-Fi - Bluetooth - microUSB Display - 3.5-inch TFT (resistive touchscreen) Proximity sensor for auto turn-off Handwriting recognition, Accelerometer sensor Full QWERTY keyboard Size and Weight 117.2 x 55.3 x 15.9-18.3mm and weighs 150 grams Memory: 128Mb RAM - 128Mb internal - 32Gb Mass storage and capable of up to 16Gb SSD micro card. It sounds incredible just how much they have crammed into this stylish little handset, and there's allot more I haven't listed above, that would be boring and nerdy. This information is more about what it can't do! There are a number of issues that reflect poorly on the overall performance of the N97, and that is how much available memory there is left after the phone has swallowed it up after it's initial boot-up. Only 56Mb! That's before you have added any other features and programs. There are a number of Nokia applications that insist on installing themselves into the internal memory and as a result the phone soon finds itself without enough space to run any applications! This includes calls not being taken or dropping out during a call. With such a massive storage drive some 32Gb, why do Nokia insist that applications be saved and installed to internal memory. Since the initial launch of the N97 there has been many bugs come to light with its many features and applications. Not a good sign for Nokia's supposed Flagship model. I've looked at the software version update log and realised there has been no less than twenty two (22) fixes released since it's launch. Version 21 update promises to address a number of issues including better RAM management, but that's something we'll have to wait and see. Don't get me wrong, I love my Nokia N97, but I need a handset I can rely upon. Choose wisely if you're considering upgrading. |

Too bad, as that is such a pretty phone. When Sprint recently bought Virgin/Helio they tried to get me to switch from my clunky but beloved Helio Ocean smart phone and try a Samsung Moment, an Android/Google phone which like your Nokia, has a better camera. But I passed. Same thing when Helio tried to get me to upgrade for free from the Ocean to an Ocean II. At the time I thought maybe I was making a mistake, but now that phone is out of production because they had so many problems with it. Newer is not always better, alas.

I agree with you whole heartedly, it's a consumer market and the urge to have the latest all-singing all-dancing gadget phones but alas they are pumped out with so many issues unresolved just to meet company deadlines. Hoping that the fixes they introduce later will fix the inherent issues they couldn't be bothered to address pre-launch. It seems that Nokia is so large now they believe they can treat the consumer this way, any other product would have been either recalled or scrapped.
Thanks for the heads up. Me? All I need is your basic "phone" phone. As long as it takes calls, sends calls, maintains a contact list, and has a message center and voice mail, that's all I need. That may change later,of course.

The Nokia 6230i was my favourite for a long while, and remains my close second as a backup phone. Click here for a look at the Nokia 6230i. It has everything you would expect from a phone but allot more for such a small phone.
