Power of the word

Power words are words that command a dominant image or give a strong impression in our minds. Language is a powerful instrument. Words such as bravery, hurt, sacrifice, worship, justice etc. generate a strong impression whereas words like hill, sea, paper, water, stairs etc. remain passive. That is because we associate feelings and actions with powerful words.

‘Touch-Button Technology’ and ‘Killer Sales’ are powerful words. Most writers use these kind of words where they bring together two entirely disparate objects in a simile for effect. People enjoy it because it’s novel. You can also create words such as these to impress people with your innovativeness and cleverness.

Language is used in many different ways and constitutes one of the principal forces controlling and forming human behaviour. Besides its most familiar and normally most discussed use, communication, language is important through its use in one's private thought, in science and in oratory, in poetry, in philosophy - and perhaps most remarkably in techniques of hypnosis.

Similarly in contrast, people who suffer from a stammer may be seen and treated as disabled by typcal attitudes towards stammering.

All too often a listener's impatience, or his making a quick stereotypical assumption that the person is slow-thinking.

A person who stammers may also be thought as disabled by arrangements to access a particular service, for example, if he has communicate by telephone to get it. In the social model, stammering is not a 'disability' (it is an 'impairment'), but people who stammer can be 'disabled' by attitudes.

Contributor's Note

Communication by means of speech is perhaps the most dramatic difference between humans and other life forms.
