Poetry - The rhythm of words

By Anthony Ashard

Worlds shortest poem:

We, see.

(Author unknown)

I've always wondered what makes a good poem. I feel that good poetry is an expression of the writers feelings that come from the heart. It can be light-hearted and funny or convey heart-felt emotion. However a poem is written, it's the act of writing the poem that I believe most important.

I've written a few poems myself and have never thought to publish them or gain recognition for them either. I believe that I simply don't have enough talent to justify publication.

Quoted from an article by: R.Pettinger

'A good poem must be well written with a concise and accurate use of language. The great advantage of poetry is that it can encapsulate ideas in the minimum of words. This is one of the main distinguishing features of poetry as compared to prose'

I love poetry, and often read random work I find around the internet, a wealth of word and sentiment that I could never match or aspire to. Appreciation of someone else's talents is enough for my entertainment.

Contributor's Note

Poetry is painting ideas with rhythm, it is good to maintain a sense of direction, this is the feelings you are trying to evoke from your audience.

Poetry... You know, there's poetry and then there's poetry. (How's THAT for a great comment?)

To me the best poetry either tells a great story, and/or paints a great picture. It engrosses you without pounding you over the head with "HEY LOOK! THIS IS POETRY!" Quote the raven "nevermore".
