PC Self diagnostics & repairs: RAM

Simple tips helping you get the most from your computer:

Symptoms:
Random losses of data and corrupt files, blue screen alerts, data that is written to an address is not what's returned when it's read later. causing corruption and loss of critical data, programs that fail, even kernel errors and inconsistancies.

Cause:
This problem can be random and sparodic, however usually occurs after a computer has been moved, and/or knocked after a long period sat in one place.

Cleaning RAM cards
Whilst the power cord is attached, but the power is turned off at the wall, open your computer's casing, making sure you earth yourself against the metal casing of your computer (reduces static), carefully remove the RAM card/s from the motherboard. (see below example images). To remove, swing back the clips at either end of the RAM card holders, until the card can be easily removed from it's slot.

Taking a pencil eraser (silicon is best) or natural rubber. and carefully rub the eraser against the contacts along the edge (both sides) of the card/s to bring the shine back to the contacts thus removing any tarnish that may have built up over time.

To re-insert the cards, ensure the locator slot on the card is aligned with the seperator peg in the slot, gently push the card back into the slot until it sits squarely and both retaining clips return to the locked position.
