Mobile phones can kill
By Anthony Ashard
There is not a day that goes by when I haven't witnessed first hand at least one person at the wheel of their car displaying poor driving skills, only to find it's because they are using a mobile handset whilst driving. Examples of poor driving include and are not limited to: * Failure to indicate at turnings. * Swerving erratically across the centre white line. * Failure to notice what other road users are doing. * Breaking late or not at all at junctions. * Speeding and tailgating other road users. Here are some interesting stories on this topic * Speed cameras could trap drivers on the phone * More drivers caught using mobile phones * Drivers using mobile phones targeted * One man using his mobile phone was completely oblivious to the fact that he was being followed by the police, while he failed to stop at a junction and drove clean across a roundabout. * In 2008, at any given moment, over 800,000 Americans were texting, making calls, or using a mobile phones while driving during the daytime. With distracted driving killing nearly 6,000 Americans in the same year, it's no mystery that mobile phone use is risky for drivers. Source Drivers who use a mobile phone, whether hand-held or hands-free: * are much less aware of what’s happening on the road around them * fail to see road signs * fail to maintain proper lane position and steady speed * are more likely to ‘tailgate’ the vehicle in front * react more slowly and take longer to brake * are more likely to enter unsafe gaps in traffic * feel more stressed and frustrated. In a new 2010 campaign, if you're caught using a mobile phone whilst driving you stand to get a £60 fine with three penalty points on your licence.

Oprah just had a show on this and it was rather disturbing. one statistic I remember is that people who are texting while driving are in 8 times more likely to get into an accident. drunk drivers and those talking on the phone are 4 times more likely.
CONTRIBUTOR'S REPLY
I've just spent an hour stuck in a traffic jam as a result of a woman driving at speed into the back of a lorry that was stationary at a set of lights, she was on the phone when she crashed, the fire brigade had to cut her out of her car after pulling the car from under the lorry. I don't think she survived, it's the third car related death this month on the same stretch of road.
We tend to underrate the possibility of an accident while at the wheels. Whether using a handsfree device or not, our attention is divided while talking on a phone. The best option is to pull up by the side of the road and answer our calls. It takes only a split second for accidents to happen. Thank you for a good article.
