Mid-life crisis
Mid-life crisis is not something you get when your hair starts to fall out or when you realise you wil never get into your favourite jeans again. Mid-life crisis is a term more commonly used to describe a period in one's life where there's a sometimes over-whelming feeling of dramatic self-doubt that is typically felt in and around the late thirties to early forties of mens lives. As we begin to sense the passing of our youth and the gradual onset of old age and all that it implies, Sometimes, transitions experienced in these years, such as aging in general, the menopause, the death of parents, or our children becoming more independant and eventually leaving the family nest can trigger the onset of a 'mid-life' crisis. The resultant onset may manifest in a desire to make significant changes in the core aspects of your day-to-day life or situation, for example a career change, marriage, or romantic relationships. What's the risk associated with Mid-life crisis? Some researchers and experts disagree that men are at risk of suffering the symptoms of mid-life crisis from the age of 30, although the period from the late 30s to age 50 is generally nearer the mark for most men. The proportion of men who experience emotional difficulties during this mid-life phase is unknown. Some psychologists argue that almost all men at some point in this phase go through a mid-life crisis to some degree – they all have to deal with what is a time of physical and emotional transition having to adjust to a new more mature perspective on life. Typically, any man for whom work is his main source of personal identity, or who starts to feel or show his age, is a strong candidate, and possibly more susceptible to suffer a mid-life crisis. There is some evidence that men most affected by the mid-life crisis are those who have given little thought to such inevitable upheavals as ageing and retirement. Studies have shown that the condition is associated with a tendency to avoid problems and an uncertainty about the future. On the other hand, it's also the case that many men seem to pass through this stage of life without any apparent difficulties at all. I myself would not say that I'm suffering from a mid-life crisis nor am I about to, however I have to say that at this time in my life, I have questioned my standing in life, my goals, career and so on... I suppose it boils down to how much control you feel you have over these changing aspects of your life...
