Honesty is the best policy You can always trust a dishonest man to be dishonest, honeslty it's the honest ones who you got to watch out for, because you never know when they're going to do something really stupid. Typically suggests that when using such openers that you are in fact not being entirely honest at all. If you are being honest all the time (which you should be), there is no need to use these kinds of 'convincer' phrases in a conversation. Being honest with yourself It may seem scary or even upsetting to imagine you might have made a mistake. perhaps you should imagine a hypothetical case where your initial assumptions were not right. This then lays an alternate way for you to think of the assumptions as being wrong, instead of yourself, this then allows you to work through the implications of the hypothetical situation. If the possibility makes a lot of sense, you may well find that you eventually believe it's really what happened.
