Home DIY Security (Advanced Detection) Techniques
By Anthony Ashard
From experience and training, I have amassed a wealth of knowledge with both professional and DIY Intruder alarm systems installation do's and don'ts. Here's a list of some useful DIY installation guidelines. Always read ALL enclosed installation manuals and user guides fully before commencing your installation. Many DIY installations fail to function correctly due to poorly followed instructions. This document covers DIY home security system installations, while using more advanced detection methods. When buying a DIY based intruder alarm system, you can consider buying additional sensors, however you can add more advanced detection devices than the smaller lower protection variety that comes with the average DIY security system. There is a wide range of devices available so I will only concentrate on a couple of recommended sensors in this document. As any half respecting burglar knows there are ways to circumnavigate some makes of detectors, rendering there protection useless against the experienced burglar, it is therefore a prudent measure to include in your arsenal a few more expensive professional sensors in places that require a bit of extra protection. There are few DIY systems that cater for external (perimeter) type devices, as a result your premises is more vulnerable to attack long before your security system detects an intrusion. So an effective deterrent is to install external detection devices. If the movements of an intruder are detected earlier as they approach your premises, they are unlikely to continue with their activities. There are a number of professional solutions and a few easy to construct DIY alternatives too. RF detector: One of the most effective solutions I've designed for one client was a simple RF wire assembly, which consisted of a series of upright plastic supports around a fence with a hole drilled in each support, then threading a plastic coated wire through the holes thus creating what is in effect and aerial around the fencing. I then designed a small circuit that would transmit a small FM signal through the wire loop, that was capable of detected changes in the returning reflected RF signal, it was sensitive enough to distinguish between a cat or bird on or near the fence, and could be tuned down to recognising a human form approaching. that in turn would activate the system once a pre-set trigger level had been received. Exterior Detection Most DIY system are supplied with indoor PIR detectors only, which provide no protection from creeping burglars who are looking for easy access points around your home. So making use of an exterior movement detector is essential. However most infra red detectors are prone to false alarms. Pictured below is an exterior multi function detector (infra-red - Doppler & ultra sonic) that relies upon multiple sensors being triggered simultaneously before sending a trigger to the control unit. A highly reliable solution, but quite expensive. CCTV Cameras An external camera (real or dummy) can be an amazing tool against the most determined of burglars, however positioning and location is of paramount importance to act as a really effective deterrent. The burglar must be able to easily see it but not able to reach it. Wireless Network cameras Wireless cameras are fast becoming a popular alternative to the standard CCTV camera, simply because you can log into your camera from anywhere in the world and see what is going on around your home at any time. Click here for a few examples of just how popular WiFi cameras are becoming. many establishments allow remote access to the cameras and some even let you control the cameras function, for example pan - tilt - zoom - focus and a few other nifty tricks.

That RF Detector would be a real asset. Reg

If you are interested Reg, I am willing to send you more detailed information on it's construction.
Some of this stuff sounds reallllly expensive. But it's nice toknow one's options. Thanks! Ya mean that little booklet that comes with this stuff are instructions? Geesh. No wonder........
Excellent intel on a topic that never gets old. Thank you.
Back in the 1970's I was designing home and business security system, Anthony. Everything was hard wired, which meant pulling wires from the attic to the basement and back to the control panel. Today's wireless equipment is wonderful and less expensive to install. Thank you for sharing. Best wishes. Frederick
I am amazed that more residential areas do not have camera surveillance. I moved out of a complex not long ago where the management refused to believe reports of illegal activity therein. Outsiders were continually jumping over the high fence to enter. Finally they put a camera up and got footage of a guy coming up to break it.
We have a security system that eats dog food.

Unfortunately an unscrupulous professional burglar would not think twice about rendering a canine security system inoperable.
