First ever computer virus

Viruses have been around now for more than twenty five years and are getting more and more advanced every day, requiring many man-hours of extensive programming to create anti virus signatures and software solutions.

The first ever virus

"Elk Cloner, which spread between Apple II computers via infected floppy disks, has the dubious distinction of the first computer virus1 to spread in the wild. The malware is thought to be the work of Rich Skrenta, a 15-year-old high school student from Pittsburgh, who released it in July 1982."

Excerpt from The Register

There are however many different claims from around the world as to where the first virus originated, for example one claim was that the fist virus was created in pakistan in 1986 by Two computer programmers called Basit and Amjad some four years after Rich Skrenta's more popular claim.

It was said that their virus replaced the original code in the boot sector of a floppy disk with their own code, and was designed to infect each 360kb floppy accessed on any drive. Infected floppy disks displayed “© Brain” as the disk's volume label.

What can infect your computer these days

Virus
A very small piece of code designed primarily to replicate and propagate itself, mainly by attaching itself to other programs, so every time you run that program, you re-run the virus repeating the infection cycle.

eMail virus
Are more specifically designed to spread themselves via your emailing software by stealing addresses from your contacts lists and address books

Worm
Are more specific in their task to replicate by means of taking advantage of vulnerabilities in your computers security, and spreading to other computers on the network.

Trojan
Delivered as a concealed payload, hence the name 'Trojan' the software you download may present itself as a useful utility but instead damages your computer once you run it. sometimes erasing your valuable data or even entire hard drives. There are many variations to the general theme of trojan activity, becoming more diverse and damaging every day.

Spyware
Once infected with spyware, you may notice many changes, including amongst other symptoms:

Your internet browser homepage has changed.

Your default search (MSN/Google) engine changes.

Pop-ups and forced advertising are displayed.

Underlined content in webpages that may lead to porn sites,
and other unwanted & unsuitable content.

Your computer slows down, programs crash.

Windows becomes completely un-responsive.

Malware
Is a newer more malicious software that is normally downloaded when visited compromised and unscrupulous websites. They are designed to download more malicious threats like trojans and worms, which in themselves can be disastrous to your computers integrity and stability.

Here are a number of recommended solutions to combat the above infection types.

A good anti-virus and firewall suite is by far the best solution, however getting the right one can be a bewildering and confusing task, considering how many there are to choose from.

Some are free, for example:

AVG

Comodo

Zonealarm

Purchase or subscription licence:

Symantec

McAfee

Sophos

Kaspersky

Anti-Spyware/Malware solutions

SpyBot S&D

Adaware

Lastly I recommend the Kaspersky free online scanner which will demonstrate just how many threats can still lay undetected.
