DVT - Deadly Silent Assassin

By Anthony Ashard of www.ctek-solutions.co.uk

My wife, in her prime, struck down with a serious DVT reaching from her left knee up into her pelvis.

To cut a long story short: My wife was taken ill two weeks ago with a suspected DVT to the left leg, after first blood tests it was discovered my wife also had a serious blood infection originating in her left thigh.

After having three operations and two weeks on Heparin and other cocktails doctors and specialists are starting to hit brick walls for lack of options now available.

My wife must return to the Royal London Hospital to have a filter removed from under her heart. This is when things can start to get 'complicated' (want for a better word).

A new device was available for use during the second operation, but unfortunately when it came to using the instrument, things went a little wrong, they couldn't get it working properly and the machine was leaking. Therefore there is a significant amount of clot which remains.

Her quality of life after this filter has been removed, is quite unpredictable, as you can imagine, becoming fully dependant on power assisted mobility.

A large mobile piece of clot can crop up in deep veins, they can follow years later in arteries, causing heart attacks and strokes

For my wife, it must be akin to having a ticking time bomb inside of her body.

To make matters all the more complicated, my wife has crohn's disease and advanced spinal Stenosis.

What is crohn's disease:
Crohn’s disease is an ongoing disorder that causes inflammation of the digestive tract, also referred to as the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. Crohn’s disease can affect any area of the GI tract, from the mouth to the anus.

Spinal stenosis is a medical condition in which the spinal canal narrows and compresses the spinal cord and nerves.

Basics - What Is DVT?
Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is a medical condition in which blood clots form within the large veins of the body, such as the calves and thighs, or also sometimes in the pelvis, chest, or arms. These blood clots impede the circulation of blood and nutrients to the limbs, as well as to various organs and body systems. Such clots may become very dangerous if they break off because they can travel to another part of the body such as the lungs, brain, or heart and block circulation to that organ. This may result in severe tissue damage and create a life-threatening situation if the clot is left untreated.

Please, if you're reading this and you have any experiences involving either your own onset of DVT, any possible treatments or alternative medicines and/or surgical procedures. I would be interested to hear from you.

Thank you for this article on DVT. I did not know how dangerous this disease was. My thoughts are with you and your wife.

I always thought DVT was something that struck suddenly; had no idea it could become an ongoing ailment to deal with. It does sound like "ticking time bomb" is a good description. I am sure that your wife's physicians - being located in a leading first-world city - will be able to defuse the bomb.

CONTRIBUTOR'S REPLY

Sadly the countries leading DVT specialists have declared that my wife's case is one of the worst they have yet encountered, with regards to the overall size and position of the clot, in that they are now unable to treat or operate on it any more, she will definitely be on drugs and most likely in a wheel chair for some years to come, and be constantly worried about weather any of the clot will move from her leg to other more vulnerable parts of her body

Please know that many of us out "there" are praying for your wife and you. Hang in there. God Bless...
