Are we secure yet?

THIS IS NOT AN ADVERTISMENT,

NOW WE GOT THAT CLEARED UP...

PLEASE READ ON...

As the title suggests this is a review questioning the profeciency of the leading computer security competitors (call them rivals) of the security suites.

What prompted this review was a string of unfortunate and stressful encounters with malicious software and a few untimely repeated days attempting to remove some very nasty and persistant infections.

"Hate spam? Well, some spammers are frequently hijacking individual computers and manipulating them to send out some of that aggravating spam that we all receive in plague proportions.

This can be done completely without your knowledge. This little ploy covers the tracks of the spammer and makes it easier for him to get his message out. A good firewall will alert you when something like this happens so you can keep your computer protected"

According to: The IgotSpam website

Therefore good fast effective protection is essential in today's internet and computer driven society.

Unfortunately the internet has become a virtual minefield of misleading and even downright malicious mis-information.

We often place 100% trust in our personal computers, mobile phones and GPS tracking/navigation devices to safely store our most critical data.

That information is private, and for someone to just gain unlawful access to your banking details, passwords, usernames and other such sensitive material poses a greater risk than most can begin to imagine.

For this reason we have to come to trust reliable and strong anti 'threat' solutions.

But we have to ask, what security software out there really performs the best, and has our interests at heart, not just trying to secure our annual fee for the updates and for their software and services.

There are however a few sites that offer unprecedented security solutions without charging the individual user a penny for very advanced and well supported features.

Take a look at http://www.comodo.com for example.

Over my years of computing and diagnostics experience, I have used and sometimes relied upon many different brands of security products, and can now say I have amassed quite a knowledge first hand with variuos popular main brands.

Spyware has never been more of a threat to everything we do while online, knowing how to protect your data and your computers integrity should never be left to chance.

Here's a few very trusted ways to elliminate most internet born malicious threats.

Anti-Spyware:

Lavasoft - Adaware

Safer networking - SpyBot S&D

TrendMicro™ - HijackThis™

It's fair to say that most if not all removal utilities like the ones recommended above can do a great job of removing most/all threats, however it's wise to mention that many removal tools can cause instability by removing said threats.

Quite often the original software that trojans are delivered in will no longer function after the associated threats have been purged.

Security vendor Softscan has released its March spam statistics. It found that spam accounted for 96.63% of all email in March, but noticed a sudden 45% drop at the end of the month:

"Although there was a significant drop in spam levels at the reputation filter, we didn't see any drop at our main spam filters," explains Diego d'Ambra, CTO of SoftScan. "This leads us to believe that spammers are cleaning up their infrastructure and are possibly starting to stop sending spam mails that will be automatically picked up by reputation filters anyway.

In some respects the drop in spam is good news, but I'm sure it won't be long until the spammers reveal their next tactic to replace the "missing" junk mail."

The company also found that virus levels remained low, accounting for just 0.07% of all emails. The top 5 virus families in March were:

1 - phishing: 77.66%
2 - dropper: 10.96%
3 - ban: 2.83%
4 - diehard: 2.07%
5 - netsky: 1.79%

Worst virus ever released:

The Mydoom virus was reported to have been the worst ever virus to hit the internet, infecting millions of users within 24 hours of initial detection. it's line of attack was to force the user to restart the pc after freezing it up, and upon restart the virus wiped the zero sector of the hard drive, making it completely useless.

The Love Bug -- was no isolated event, in fact causing many millions in lost hardware and business revenue. Not to mention tens of thousands on home computers rendered totally unusable.

The wife is on Windows XP and it seems every week her PC is being carted off by a technician to reinstall the O/S or reformat the hard drive or whatever because of some issue, possibly a virus or spyware. It's hard for non-expert users to even know if their problem is being caused by spyware or a virus, or Windows itself, or faulty hardware, or all of the above!

By the way, in addition to Komodo, there is one other product that should be mentioned, the free firewall from ZoneAlarm (correct me if I'm wrong).

CONTRIBUTOR'S REPLY

Firstly Nick, The process of ellimination is the first way to deal with any fault or situation. I would primarily investigate the most likely causes for corruption and work towards a finite conclusion to resolve the issue/s that are affecting the overall performance.

By description alone of one or more symptoms, I can usually tell by experience what is the cause of the fault.

If the problem is software, driver or infection related, I can usually resolve most issues quickly using the CTEK 'remote assistance' server. Click here to read more about CTEK-Solutions 'Remote Assistance' service.

Hardware issues I can only advise upon, but rarely is the problem hardware related.

Lastly I didn't add ZoneLabs Zone Alarm to the list as it's a firewall that is free to single users, spammed out by zonealarm adverts until paid for, and I listed anti-spyware products.

Weeky is too often for techs to work on a pc. How well do you know the techs? Windows has it's own system maintanance, upgrades and can be restored to an earlier time by non-tech users. If the techs are using non-licenses software that can be a problem, for windows updates will know and refuse to co-operate with non-licensed versions of its software.
