Addictions: Fast food is so good!
By Anthony Ashard
Quite simply JUNK FOOD is good, however it is common knowledge that it is also very bad for your health if consumed in the slightest excess. What's in a Big Mac? Two 100% beef patties Sesame seed bun American cheese slice Big Mac sauce Lettuce Pickles Onions Salt Pepper It's a lesser known fact that one Big Mac is 500 Calories, and contains hazardous amounts of salt and saturated fats. In a perfect world where McDonald's prepare the burger for the advertising banners and menus, the burger is made to perfection, but in reality the burger we receive on average is thrown together in a mass production griddle going flat out operated by one new staff member still in their training period. I admit much of my middle-aged body weight is as a result of the consumption of too many McFat burgers. It's hard to get oneself off the lovely tasty easy to munch fast food that is McDonald crap. Don't get me wrong, I've known for years that I shouldn't eat that type of food, but being armed with the knowledge that guns kill doesn't stop people from carrying them and using them! Let's face it Burgers are nice, quick and easy to eat! we know it, they know it, and all too many of us suffer as a result of it's addictive qualities. It's not just the burgers, it's the fries and the milkshakes that make the whole experience more appealing and yes, addictive. So in an attempt to wean myself off the ever addictive McFat burgers, I'll head for a Subway instead. They are very nice and much more of a healthy option with ingredients that are far better for you. I think McDonald restaurants should come with a general health warning! One very worrying fact about their preparation is that all McDonald restaurants I've visited add copious amounts of salt onto the fries they put in kids meals. That's seriously wrong!

Contributor's Note
What is Junk Food? Food which contains little amount of nutrition and high content of harmful ingredients or both is generally referred to as junk food. The term 'junk food' was coined by Michael Jacobson in the year 1972. Junk food is considered harmful for health and attempts are being made to minimize the intake of these dangerous food items. One would be amazed to know the amount of sugar and other harmful ingredients we consume through junk food. Excessive sugar and the accompanying obesity is just one of the harmful junk food facts. For kids to understand the importance of a healthy diet, they should be informed of the health problems associated with the intake of junk food.

Soo true! I used to work with a co-owner of McDonalds and he wouldn't eat there. Reason: You have said it only too well.

30 million obese people worldwide still don't get it! That's the problem! McFat burger ain't no goooood!
McDonald's are obviously doing the advertising much better than me! I have been trying for a number of years to get people to use my healthy products. How ever I do not add addictive substances to the supplements I supply, they are natural and organic. So unless you really want to be healthy, I have found most people think they are bomb proof!, you don't become addicted to what I sell. Good health is almost as addictive as junk foods. How can you expect children to listen to good advice when they see their parents and other adults eating and ENJOYING the very foods they tell them not to eat! We lead by example, monkey see monkey do..
Amen!
I think the problem is that too many become addicted to certain foods, and as you point out that's certainly the case with McDonald restaurants. I can't remember the last time I ate in one. I just think all things in moderation, but with all the glossy advertising it can be hard for some to resist fast food places.

Think about all that fat, sitting in your stomach, after a big Mac? Think about all fast food that are kids are introduce under the sign of the Arches? Not Food for thought? Ed
Love the pic... Now THAT's a burger! You're right, of course. Where've you been?
Early American settlers used salt to preserve their food and animal fat to flavor it (they never wasted anything)! Even farm families in the last century and some today use a lot of salt and fat. However, their life style of hard, physical work allowed them to work off the fat and sweat out the salt. (Children also worked and didn't have much leisure time). Today, I go to fast food restaurants and eat snacks and candy occasionally because I like the taste, even knowing there is no nutritional value. But allowing children to eat junk food on a regular basis is not responsible. These children will have problems with their weight and health for years until someone teaches them about nutrition.
The food is bad enough, Anthony, but we compound the problem by allowing the fat parents to drive up to the drive-up window to get the bad food for their fat kids. Let's start a movement to close all drive-up windows, unless you have a handicap sticker on your car. Thank you for sharing. Good to have you back! Best wishes. Frederick
Loved the picture! Food companies spend billions manufacturing their food to get us to want to eat more of it. Our bodies become use to the chemicals and feel uncomfortable without them. Thanks for writing.
Absolutely right. I had recently been working on reducing my cholesterol. My mother who I visit each week and take out to lunch, loves burgers and that's all she wants on her once a week trip out. Now mind you she weighs a whopping 77 lbs so she's completely unconcerned with her weight. Anyway, I had to find a way to get around this and thoroughly researched the nutritional values of the various fast foods. I can tell you that I compromised most often with a grilled chicken sandwich at the fast food establishment of her choice. If there's a bunch of mayo or bacon included I just took most of it off and enjoyed. You still need to be careful even at Subway.
I don't blame McDonald's as much as I do the school districts and the parents, and yes, the kids, too, for selecting the worst combinations on the menu. A little fast food as you suggest is not going to pull the plug on society, but people do not know how to reason with their urges. If we didn't buy the stuff and consume it, McD's would sell something else.
Be careful of toppings you put on at Subway. They can turn that healthy sandwich into a mountain of calories and fat! I do enjoy my banquet burgers - burger, cheese, bacon, lettuce, tomatoes - yummy. I had one once in Australia that was topped with a fried egg - that was scrumptiously delicious. p.s. I don't have to worry about gaining weight, just how to keep it on.
